The closed was designed with a conventional layout in the sense that the cabin was fully enclosed to transport the wife and young children in complete secure comfort. However, as the second boat was for the owner and his male entourage, there was some freedom to explore a subtly different design concept. The forward helm position was retained as visibility was important considering the added security concerns, and the clear aft deck arrangement was also carried over as this offered great flexibility of use.
After a lengthy conceptual design process an open cabin concept was selected. The forward end was detailed in a similar way to the closed, this time with a much wider sliding glass panels. The extra glass makes for a much more exposed feel whilst delivering the essential wind protection required to ensure comfort at speed. With the client being a classic Porsche enthusiast, inspiration for the revised coach roof design came from the infamous Porsche Targa roll bar detail, right down to the 3 slash marks that symbolize the signature of this automotive icon.
Externally the clear coat carbon roof is impeccably finished, complimented perfected by the whisper grey hull, metallic silver roll bar and polished stainless details. Like the closed boat the design is sporty, well balanced with great proportions regardless of the internal height requirements for the 6’3” owner.
As you would expect the character and experience from inside is very different to the closed boat. The soft flowing lines and organic styling is the same but this time the finishes have been simplified to reflect the change in conditions. The teak floor has an integrated roll up edge detail illuminated by the low level recessed led strip light. Led lighting is also integrated in the window reveals and ceiling gutterways and 2 tv’s are integrated on the forward bulkhead along with controls for the lighting and sound. Privacy on the sides is provided by switchable glass panels to remove the need for blinds, and heavy tinted glass is used on the double curvature panels overhead.
The removal of the aft bulkhead delivers that constant connection with the natural environment providing an experience under way that is both unique and inspiring. In summary, the brief for something different was successfully accomplished.
